Final Grade Calculator
Find the score you need on your final exam to finish the class with the grade you want.
How the final grade calculation works
Your final exam counts for a share of the class grade. The rest is what you have already earned. Rearranging the weighted average gives the score you need:
W is the final exam weight as a decimal, so 25% is 0.25.
Examples
| Current | Goal | Final weight | Needed on final |
|---|---|---|---|
| 82% | 90% | 25% | 114% |
| 82% | 85% | 25% | 94% |
| 75% | 70% | 40% | 62.5% |
In the first row the score is above 100%, so a 90% overall is out of reach unless your teacher offers extra credit. Lower the goal to see what is possible.
Frequently asked questions
What if the result is over 100%?
The goal cannot be reached with the final exam alone. Pick a lower goal, or ask whether extra credit is available.
Where do I find the final exam weight?
It is usually listed in the course syllabus or grading policy, often as a percentage of the total grade.
What if my result is zero or negative?
You already have enough points for that goal. Any passing score on the final keeps your grade at or above it.
Does this work with letter grades?
Convert the letter grade to a percentage first, using your school's grading scale, then enter the numbers.
Can I use this for a quiz or a test?
Yes. Enter the weight of that test instead of the final exam weight.
Results are estimates. Check your school's grading policy for the final answer.
